Over the month of July, I will be sharing some of my favourite activities, blog posts, podcasts, books and products. One of the things I enjoy doing over the winter season is visiting various farmer’s markets. It is not only a great way for me to source some of the best organic ingredients for the week, but it’s also a great opportunity to get the kids out of the house for some fresh air, vitamin D, live music, art and get to know and support small businesses.
Here Are 3 Markets I Recommend You Peruse This Winter
Name: Victoria Yards Sunday Market
Time: 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM (First Sunday of the Month)
Address: 16 Viljoen St, Lorentzville, Johannesburg
This market offers a variety of fresh Urban farmed seasonal fruits and vegetables, food, clothing, book vendors and live entertainment for the family.
What sets this market apart from the others is the various Galleries and Artisan Studios where you can not only purchase but commission pieces from well-known artists. Victoria Yards is also home to some of South Africa’s luxury brands such as Mantsho by Palesa Mokubung, Tshepo Jeans, Timbuktu In the Valley, Through The Lens Collective and others.

Name: Riversands Farm Village Farmers Market
Time: Tuesday – Sunday 9 am – 4 pm
Address: Riversands Commercial Park, Rose Road, Knopjeslaagte, Midrand, 2189
Farm Village is open 6 days a week and is situated on a beautiful piece of land that is rich in history. The idea of the market took root in the 1940s when Granny Lemay started selling her eggs and chickens on the side of the William Nicol Dr She then opened the soon-to-be-famous Riversands Farmstall which became a weekend country outing. People came in their droves to buy her delicious chicken pies.
Today the Riversand Farm Village Market continues to offer a great experience of a variety of organic foods, plants, flowers, clothing and handmade goods. There is also a great children’s play and picnic area to enjoy with family and friends. Because of the neighbourhood, this Farmer’s Market does not permit live or loud music performances.
Riversands, also includes forest adventures, zip-lining, bike trails and other fun outdoor adventure activities.
